A Slice of Cake and Piece of Cupcake

What Makes Life so Sweet? Cakes & Cupcakes to eat and Someone to Love.”

In previous centuries, cakes were normally fried breads or cheesecakes, and normally had a disk shape; while cupcakes were actually cakes baked in individual pottery cups called ramekins or molds where they took their name from the cups they were baked in.Originally, cupcakes were actually called “Number Cakes” or “1234 Cakes” because its portions were easy to remember portions.  Original cupcake recipes were usually just flavored with spices or dried fruit and were not frosted and were much quicker to cook than regular cakes.  It started in the early 2000’s, when the cupcake first gained popularity; nowadays, the trend is in full swing.

Anniversary CakesGreeks called cakes “plakous” which means “flat” and were usually combinations of nuts and honey.  During the Roman period the name for cake was known as “placenta” derived from the Greek term, they developed early versions of fruitcakes with raisins, nuts and other fruits and were primarily used as an offering to their gods.

In Scotland, and parts of Wales and northern England, among the remains found were makeshift cakes made from flatteneddampened gains, packed down and cooked on a hot stone; These “cakes” are considered to be more closely related to biscuits made from oatmeal by virtue of their flat, thin shape and brittle texture.

In Asia, “cakes” are quite different from the western-style cakes such as the moon cakes which are traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival in China linked to the Legends of Chang E, the mythical Moon Goddess of Immortality.  Rice cakes called bibingka from the Philippines which are made with rice flour combined with coconut milk as a binding substance and lined with banana leaves, traditionally baked in specially made clay ovens and preheated charcoal; served during festivities specially during the Christmas season.

Cakes are usually baked for special occasions because they were made with the finest and most expensive ingredients available. In the earlier centuries, the wealthier a person was, the more likely he might consume cake on a more frequent basis.  Cakes were considered a symbol of well-being.

The ability to bake a good cake was a prized skill among housewives in the early to mid-20th century, with a huge repertoire of cake recipes developed from the basic methods.  Cakes and cupcakes have implied abundance and hospitality, which says “come again”. Although the popularity of home baking and its role in the diet have changed during the 20th century, cakes and cupcakes remain almost universaland have kept their image as ‘treats’ and maintain their ceremonial importance at weddings and birthdays.
