The Delights of Devonshire Tea

A cup of tea? How do you take it?

Milk, sugar?…. Maybe a slice of lemon?

I actually prefer my cup of tea served with a side of freshly baked scones, a smudge of jam and a dollop of cream!

While going out for ‘coffee and cake’ has become quite the flavour, there’s something still very quaint and appealing about a traditional Devonshire Tea and it’s dusting off the granny reputation to make a comeback amongst the trendy set!

Also known as a Cream Tea, when you order a Devonshire Tea expect your cuppa to be accompanied by a freshly baked scone, served with a pot of jam and freshly whipped cream. There’s no hurrying a Devonshire Tea, it’s a ritual to be enjoyed and savoured.

Like all good long-standing traditions, there is reportedly a ‘proper’ way to have your Devonshire Tea. Enjoying it authentically involves splitting your scone in two before applying lashings of clotted cream with a dollop of, what should be, strawberry jam then placed on top. Butter is a no-no and the tea ideally should be served with milk.

Tradition aside, we believe a Devonshire Tea should be served and enjoyed just the way you like it!

Here, we’re including five quick tips for what we feel makes a wonderful Devonshire Tea . . .

1. Indulge yourself and serve your Devonshire Tea in fine China.

2. Although a simple black leaf tea is synonymous with Devonshire Tea, there’s nothing wrong with trying a more exotic blend or even herbal tea for something a bit different.

3. Fresh jam is preferable and beats any supermarket variety hands down. Try some local farmer’s markets to source freshly preserved jam.

4. Perfectly whipped cream comes from taking care not to over-beat and by ensuring you start with chilled, fresh cream. A drop of vanilla added once the cream starts to thicken is a delicious extra.

5. A Devonshire Tea is best enjoyed with company, so invite a friend and enjoy catching up over this long-standing morning or afternoon tea favourite.

The Killarney Vale Bakery promises you’ll be able to enjoy your Devonshire Tea in a relaxed atmosphere and we look forward to seeing you soon for morning or afternoon tea in the Cafe.
