Café & Coffee

Cafes and coffee go together; cafés have long been the favorite venue where people gather to talk or pass the time while drinking their coffees.  It is a place for casual eating and drinking venue depending on the culture.

Nowadays, cafés don’t only serve coffee but also tea, sandwiches and pastries; and offer other services such as internet access, thus the name “internet café” has been a term carried by coffee shops which provide internet service for their customers.

Cafes and coffeeIn the Middle East and in West Asia, many cafés offer flavored tobacco smoked through a hookah; and are called shisha. The first coffeehouse opened in Istanbul at about the 16th century, when a fellow Hakam from Aleppo and a wag called Shams from Damascus came to the city, opened a large shop and began to sell coffee.

But, it’s not long before these coffeehouses especially in Mecca soon became a concern to the imams as coffee houses had been associated as places for political gatherings and banned both the coffee houses and the drink for Muslims between 1512 and 1524.  In 1530, the first coffee house was opened in Damascus and spread through Cairo.

Thus, the formation of culture around coffee and coffeehouses was born.  Spreading across Western Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, becoming a social hub as well as popular meeting places for artists and where intellectual speak their minds.

Much has changed since then, coffeehouses are now more slowly paced, offers gourmet service, wireless internet, have more sophisticated and stylish interior decorations and have spread the franchise of business; yet continues to form part of the concept of coffee culture.

In Northern Europe, coffee parties are a popular form of entertainment served with cakes and pastries.  Coffee plays a great role in much of history and literature and is considered as one of the main economic goods for trade.
