A Cake and Quick Bread in One!

I asked the maid in dulcet tone
To order me a buttered scone;
The silly girl has been and gone
And ordered me a buttered scone.

Chocolate SconeAcademic studies shows that scones is pronounced as /ˈskɒn/mostly by British, Scottish, Australians, Canadians and New Zealanders; while in United States and Ireland it I pronounces as /ˈskn/.

But no matter how it is pronounced in many parts of the world, scone is often lightly sweetened, sometimes glazed and it is the basic part of cream tea or Devonshire tea.  Unlike teacake or other sweet buns, a scone is a type of pastry; which is originally round and flat as large as a medium-sized plate.

It was made with unleavened oats and baked on a griddle, then cut into triangles for serving.

Modern scones now have a lot of varieties such as those that frequently include raisins, currants, cheese or dates.

Some savoury varieties of scone include soda scones known as soda farls and potato scones which looks like small, thin pancakes made with potato flour.  There is also the griddle scones variety which is fried rather than baked.

Lemonade scone is another variety made with lemonade and cream instead of butter and milk.  There is also the fruit scone variety which usually contains currants, sultanas, and glace cherries mixed into the dough.

In Australia, you can find an old style of cooking scones which is deep fried or pan fried called “puftaloons”; these are usually made in the colder season.  Another variety of scones found in Australia is the pumpkin scone made with mashed cooked pumpkin mixed with the dough.

Those dripping crumpets, I can see them now. Tiny crisp wedges of toast, and piping-hot, flaky scones.
